Anomaly scan price in Kenya: what the 20-week scan really costs in 2026

How much an anomaly (mid-trimester) ultrasound costs across Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru in 2026 — what's included, what's an upcharge, and how mobile sonography compares.

The anomaly scan — sometimes called the mid-trimester scan, level 2 ultrasound, or 20-week scan — is the most clinically important ultrasound of any pregnancy. In Kenya in 2026, expect to pay KES 3,500 to KES 8,500 depending on where and how you have it done.

What an anomaly scan price typically includes

A complete anomaly scan should include a systematic structural review of the baby's brain, face, heart, spine, abdominal wall, kidneys, bladder, limbs, and placenta. The price should include the scan itself plus a written report signed by a sonographer or radiologist. If the quote excludes the report — add KES 800 to 1,500.

Anomaly scan price by setting

  • Public referral hospital (Kenyatta, Mathari, Coast General): KES 1,500 – 2,500. Often long waits and limited reporting.
  • Mission hospital (Aga Khan University Hospital, MP Shah, Nairobi Hospital): KES 5,000 – 8,500. Full report, advanced equipment.
  • Private radiology clinic (in Westlands, Kilimani, Nyali): KES 4,000 – 7,500. Quick turnaround, full report.
  • Mobile sonographer at home (Jionee and similar): KES 4,500 – 6,500. No queues, scanned in your own bed.

Why the price varies so much

Three factors drive the price: the sonographer's experience (a foetal medicine consultant charges more than a general sonographer), the equipment (a 2026-generation machine with HD-flow and 4D is more expensive than a basic 2D unit), and whether the price includes a follow-up consultation if anything abnormal is detected. Always ask what's included — the cheapest quote often isn't the best value.

Is the anomaly scan covered by NHIF or insurance?

Most private medical schemes cover the anomaly scan under their antenatal benefit — typically KES 30,000 to 80,000 per pregnancy. NHIF Linda Mama covers basic antenatal care including ultrasound at NHIF-accredited maternity hospitals; the anomaly scan is included in many packages. Confirm with your scheme and ask for pre-authorisation if you're going to a private centre.

When mobile is the right call

For high-risk pregnancies on bed rest, twin or triplet pregnancies, or anyone living more than an hour from a quality ultrasound centre, mobile sonography saves time and stress. A licensed sonographer arrives with portable equipment, runs the full anomaly protocol on your bed, and uploads images to a consultant for second opinion within hours.

Don't skip this scan over price

If you can afford only one detailed scan in your entire pregnancy, make it the anomaly scan at 20 weeks. Almost every major structural diagnosis that changes pregnancy management is made on this scan.
